This is why we can't have nice things. WFNX being sold to Clear Channel UPDATE

Anyone in New England will instantly understand how sad this news is. For those of you who don't know, 101.7 WFNX is a legendary radio station here in the Boston area that to this day, well, not this day I guess, continues to surprise and excite me with the new music they play and the chances they've been willing to take to expose listeners to new music, to support New England bands, and to keep the spirit of what radio used to be about alive -- even if they did play one too many Chilli Peppers songs from time to time to keep the []'s engaged. The Boston Phoenix, who own the station, .

...Despite its celebrated history, its cutting edge programming , its tradition of breaking new music, its ardent fans among listeners and advertisers, for some time it has been difficult to sustain the station  -- especially since the start of the Great Recession.

And that is why the station is being sold...

UPDATE:

As someone who cut my teeth at the Dig once upon a time, but is proud to work for the Phoenix now, this piece on Dig Boston by Hilary Hughes was extremely touching and well said by. As Phoenix music editor Michael Marotta said, "it's a little dusty in here."

I've always been annoyed by the sniping back and forth, and think there's more than enough room for two alt-weeklies in this vibrant town that I love/hate.

I have many fond memories of listening to the station way back when, and I have tried to stay loyal but it is mostly a mediocre RHCP/Gotye/Coldplay farm of late.

Sorry to see it go but times have moved on long ago. People create their own radio stations on Spotify and the like now.

I thought 1 in 10 was an important show at the time and it was a thrill to hear a friend's band on Boston Accents, but the internet has helped kill this as much as the recession.

I hear you, but they still broke new bands all the time, especially the UK indie bands I am into, and were way more supportive of regional bands than they needed to be.

Chilli Peppers AND Jane's Addiction. Like, every hour. But, yeah, really sad.

Who gives a fuck if they play some mainstream shit the point is they actually play newer stuff that people haven't heard before and local stuff, most other stations don't do that shit. Idk about you guys, but I could actually tolerate leaving this station on for a decent amount of time before groaning and saying what the fuck is this shit. It's a loss, it fucking sucks.

We agree dude.

What do you guys think of 88.1? Some of their late night programs play exclusively local music[Pipeline?]. Other good programs as well. 90.3 has it's moments as well. Anyways the point is, their are other options, sans RHCP and Coldplay. FNX was the shit though.

They were the first station I knew of to have a live instant message/ICQ thingy back in the late 90s where you could chat with the on-air DJs and other listeners who upgraded to a 56K modem.

They also got me into The Cult, Charlatans, Lush and House of Love. It'll be sad to seem them go.

Long live Henry Santoro, Julie Kramer and Morning Guy Tai wherever he is.

I don't listen to as much college radio as I should. Pretty much exclusively want to listen to talk radio when I'm driving.

Still listening to any music radio station is the buying CDs of listening to music.

Also, I can't think of a single on-air personality who doesn't come off as a total knob.

Listen, I have great find memories of that station, my first Thanksgiving in the United States I cooked a turkey the size of an 8th grader and had FNX on the whole day. I loved every second of it. It was all the bands I loved and those I would come to love.

But any time I have turned it on recently it was playing indie classics. Who on this planet needs to hear Radiohead's Creep again? And why should I have to sit through Coldplay anytime?

It had its time, it's gone.

Radio is for news and sports now. And people that want the security blanket of the same 10 songs.
It is not for people who truly like music.

RIP. I loved you once.

The only have "good" talk radio in The America, though. Elsewhere it's just faggots babbling.

AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE A CAR.
