Slavery was a blessing says Arkansas State Rep

Remember that very serious national discussion we had about the blessings of rape and all the good that's come out of it a few months back? Couldn't possibly get much worse than that, could it? I mean, we've seen politicians say some horrific shit over the years, but that's about the nadir, right? Nope, fuck you, it always gets worse. Like this quote from Arkansas State Rep Jon Hubbard's new book Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative, via Talk Business.

The institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.
Among many other you've-got-to-be-shitting-me moments, he also posits that blacks living in slavery probably had better lives than their counterparts in Africa, so what's the big deal?   Read more of the gruesome reality of an actual law-making person in the year 2012 here.  As Michael Cook asks:

It blows my mind that this man is an elected state representative. Are the above views shared by others in the Republican legislative caucus?  Have any Republican legislators ever denounced Hubbard from writing straight-out racist statements?  Is this representative of the Republican Party of Arkansas reflective of the party’s attitude toward African-American Arkansans?  Will they condemn this intolerance and ignorant attitude?  Silence will speak volumes.
Allow me to answer those questions. Yes, obviously. Probably not. Yes. No.

And to my black friends in America, allow me to be the first to say: you're welcome.

Finally, I can let go of this guilt I've been holding onto

That's like saying that surviving through the Holocaust was a blessing in disguise for us Jews because we got to watch Munich afterwards.

I've heard this arugment before.People usually end up ensnared in it the way this guy has. His point is obvious: life in America is much better than life in Africa. No one would doubt that. The faux pas he makes is giving positive attributions to slavery.

another example of this: Bibi Netanyahu once made the remark that "9/11 was good for Israel". What he meant was it clued the US in on terrorism. What many people were angered by was the notion that 9/11 was somehow good. (I should I guess say for the sake of whatever that I don't KNOW that Netanayhu doesn't think 9/11 was good or that this guy doesn't think slavery was good I just assume it.)

Black people today don't have to be slaves in order to live in the United States. They should always have been allowed to be here as immigrants and as part of society as they are now. What he should have said was something like slavery was very uncalled for (a la Jay from Sarah Silverman Show) but Africa is a hellhole and the US is not.

The Romans killing Jesus was a blessing

I like this Hubbard kid. Too many young people forget that we used to work black people like slaves. We were hard but fair. Today we just say sup bro and buy weed from them. Given the chance I think they'd all like to regain that pride that comes from hard work and the occasional whipping. Also, show me any Arkansas State Representative that doesn't have jungle fever.

Lester, you say no one would doubt that life is better in America than Africa. Well, I doubt it.

Being forced from family, chained in the hold of a ship for weeks, sold (sold! Like a rake, or a pair of jeans!), forced to do menial labor in an unfamiliar land, owners speaking a new language, and strangers all around. The post-slavery years haven't exactly a walk in the park, either.

Whatever, I'm just a Commie liberal fag. I guess we should all be saying YOU'RE WELCOME to every black person we see.

Everything you say about slavery is true but America's standard of living is much higher than Africa's. There are, I don't know, millions? of black people who are rich, middle class, or whatever. even the ones who are poor are living above the level they would be in Africa. If not, they would all go back there! Would you move to Africa?? No one says yeah i'm gonna make my fortune in Zimbabwe and live the African dream.

The biggest problem I have with your comment is that black people who were brought from Africa to be slaves aren't immigrants. We never were. We became unwilling natives of this country.
