CRUSHGAZE MONDAYS: new music from La Sera, Best Coast and Speedy Ortiz

Besties 4 lyfe

Crushgaze, as you'll no doubt have forgotten unless you're some kind of weirdo, is the super relevant term I invented to describe the type of music played by Cults et al in this interview I did with them in the Phoenix a while back. No idea why it hasn't taken the world by storm yet. Maybe it wasn't stupid enough?

What do you think has been the most buzzed-about indie style over the past few years? Electro-house? Dubstep? 9tz grunge?
All worthy guesses, but look to the music of New York City duo Cults for a better answer. Their reverb-laden '60s Girl-Group-pop is one part sunny sheen of a hipstamatic California beach party, one part big-city crime noir. It sounds like roller skating down the boardwalk and tripping over a murdered wannabe Hollywood starlet, then falling in love with her anyway. Of course, the same can be said of everyone from Lykke Li to Best Coast to Vivian Girls to La Sera to Dum Dum Girls and every other indie bird with fierce bangs and a shoulder-sleeve tattoo making music now in a reactionary magical manic-pixie antithesis ideal.

I bring it up because two new songs from that 100% accurate and totally evocative genre just pooped into my inbox. The one above is from La Sera. It's particularly relevant to my interests because most of the time I'm working out at the gym I imagine Kickball Katy swaying back in forth in a swing above me, gazing at me lovingly. The new Best Coast track "The Only Place" is below. Good for them. And for you.

Not sure if this technically qualifies, since it's more 9TZ (via That Dog) than 6TZ-ish, but let's say this one from Speedy Ortiz counts because as a male music writer I'm supposed to think "girl" is an appropriate genre signifier for the convenience of trend-jamming.  (h/t Illya Mxx).

Considering lyrics like this maybe it's actuall anti-crush-gaze? NEW GENRE! Slutcrushwave? All of those things are words.

"Now I've got a boy in a hardcore band. I've got a boy likes to fuck to Can. Then there's the boy, sings the sad songs I like. I've got too many boyfriends to see you tonight."

Anyway, Speedy Ortiz play Great Scott on April 9.

OOooO maybe. Almost sounds a little post punk/ chillwave to me. BUT WHY NOT!?

Maybe Frankie's more chillcrush/postgaze. Hints of shoepunk in some of her work too.
