This past Thursday, a bunch of teenagers in Miami protested the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, whose case has become international news, largely because it's so damn scary. You know this already, but Martin was tailed by a local man, who in his 911 call, seemed hell-bent on preemptively striking down this no-good 17-year-old. What happened is still unclear, but Martin wound up dead, and Zimmerman, claiming that he fired in self-defense, is famously un-arrested. When NBC's Miami affiliate ran this piece on yesterday's protest, the comment section included some choice remarks:

As far as their education goes, they can miss a year of school and it wouldn't make a difference in their knowledge or intelligence. How many in their herd will be guilty of murder in the next 5 years. I will bet a million that it will be higher(much higher) than a similar group of white kids. At least the white kids are of value to the future of this nation and are not an overall drain on it. Obsolete farm equipment has no value.
Note the kicker in that second comment, “Obsolete farm equipment has no value.” Those six baleful words are a master class in racist zingers. They sail past the casual villainy of chuckling knowingly at forwarded e-mails about Obama's lineage, or insisting to your friends that Asians are bad drivers. The hatred in that comment is pounded from evil stuff, and forged in the heat of countless flame wars. This guy is a pro.
But here's the twist, this champion of the netherworld isn't striking through the standard online veil, from the safety of an anonymous or clever white power username. This isn't TurnerDiaries4Life bringing the pain and then slipping back into his secret identity. It's someone named James Streeter, logged in from his Facebook account.
Now Streeter, if that's his real name, knows enough to keep his Facebook account private, so aside from a few random wall posts and the fact that he subscribes to Republican Senator Eric Cantor's public Facebook updates, we can't glean anything truly personal. But other profiles attached to blatantly racist comments aren't blocked in the slightest.
Take Steve Webb, for example, who wrote, “and don't come back you racist self hating always-a-victim fools! Take a look at yourselves and the hate crimes blacks are committing every day before you decide to become judge, jury and executioner”
Checking out Webb on Facebook, we see that his wife, Keitha Webb, “Likes” this comment. A show of marital solidarity, and such. But her profile shows that she's employed at Webb Works Automotive. Connect the dots, and a hateful online outbust is tied directly to a Texas-based auto body shop, handing anyone who might breeze past this article, or either of the Webbs' Facebook walls, with all the reason in the world to boycott that business for life.
This is isn't investigative journalism, by the way. This is a few clicks here and there. It's data synergy at work, wherein large networks of websites automatically log you into a site based on your Facebook account, to boost everyone's chances for traffic, and keep all things online sliding back towards the Facebook gravity well. So while we already know that the user-generated portion of the internet is a toilet stall of infinite size, covered in dick jokes and epithets and the occasional obliquely funny roast, what's happening here is new. It's like scrawling the n-word on that stall, and then taping your business card next to it. The bigots are leaving a digital paper trail.
Are they doing this intentionally? Is it possible that they're too stupid to understand Facebook's reach or permanence? Or is there something in our brains that doesn't quite process how social networks work? The evidence isn't convincing yet in any direction, but to me, this is progress. The internet is producing forensic evidence, and, until the monsters wise up, they're exposing themselves to our pitchforks and torches.
And in case you visited that story, and are feeling as disgusted by humanity as vomited forth on a comment thread, take heart. One Quincy Williams was holding court, swinging at every fool in sight. Behold this burn of burns.

Racist people always think other people who look "the same" as them are secretly racist too. The times I've called friends or workmates out for saying stupid racist shit they usually act really hurt and puzzled, like I've betrayed them on some deep personal level.

I recently read an extremely racist comment under a popular Youtube video. I clicked on the guy's profile to find that his channel mostly contained videos of him showing off his brand new patrol car.
