Oh shit, black dudes on a college campus? Fire up the Bat signal.
An astute observer of the hyper-vigilant police work going on at our institutions of higher learning sent me an email. "This past weekend, Tufts Police Department (TUPD) sent out an e-mail to the entire student body about a black man on campus with a gun, based on a report from a caller. They did not confirm the presence of this person, nor a gun on campus before sending a university wide e-mail."
Because it's better to be safe than sorry. How's that slogan on the subway go? "If you see something (weird) say something (stupid)"? Something like that.
Tell us what to be scared of now, campus police:
Today at approximately 2:35 PM the Tufts Police on the Medford/Somerville campus received a report that a male with a handgun was seen getting into a vehicle parked on Professors Row near Curtis Street. The male was then observed driving down Professors Row, taking a left onto Packard Ave. The following description was given:
African American male approximately 40 years old 6 feet tall, stocky build, bald and clean shavenWearing a green shirt, jeans and a dark grey or black jacketSilver revolver shownBlack Nissan 4 door vehicle, possibly an Altima or MaximaPossible Massachusetts license plate
An area search by the Tufts Police proved negative. Medford Police and Somerville Police were notified.
That sounds a little scary, I suppose. Except, woops, just kidding everyone, turns out it was one of the official ones that we keep around.
Today at approximately 4:00 PM the Tufts Police received a phone call from a person who stated that he had received the previous safety alert (below) concerning a report of a person carrying a handgun. He stated that he had been walking on Professors Row spinning a ratchet wrench during the time listed and he matched the physical description in the alert. He believed the ratchet had been mistaken for a revolver-style handgun. The Tufts Police confirmed this information during an in-person interview with the caller, a member of the Tufts Community.
This person had done nothing wrong, and there was no danger to anyone at any time. We appreciate his quick response to our original message.
Oh, thanks for clarifying that. Apparently this guy walking down the street doing his job wasn't doing anything wrong. And now we are all safe, forever.
A little more context from our tipster:
"There are probably a total of 10 people max on our campus that fit this description, 100 black people max on our campus at any time, we have a history of being a racist campus and just had a white university president chosen after a large petition circulated last year asking for a person of color or a woman to be considered/chosen, and our campus academic quad is built on one of the more well known plantations in Boston. Go Tufts!"
Go Tufts indeed. Side note: I used to play ultimate frisbee on the campus there back in college. Now, I know that makes me guilty of being a college-y college dork at one point, but does that make me racist now too? I'll say yes, just to be safe.

I don't know if there is a sport that exists that has a higher % of white folks playing it than ultimate. The hippies who fashion themselves ultimate players would choke at this notion, but I can't think of a whiter sport.
Sweet lay out for 6 the other way knows no color now don't it?
This has just caused my confidence in the power of petitions to waiver.
Come again?
ultimate frisbee is not only 100% white, its also 100% heterosexual. i'm surprised hitler didn't invent it but then i remembered it was probably luke oneil that invented it.
Close enough, right?
the tipster's comments should definitely be taken with a whole block of salt. i went to berkeley and there were plenty of people associated with our campus, including students, who would describe it as a "racist campus." however we're talking radical tree-sitting hippies here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_oak_grove_controversy).
so is berkeley a racist university? maybe according to BAMN, but compared to other large public universities? hardly.
this just in: the fact that a petition signed by the 5% of your school that is fanatically far left calling for
a person of color to be "considered" was ignored by the administration doesn't make the school racist.
A person of color to be considered what?
...a suspect?
