Remember last week when the session drummer from Jack Black and Juliette Lewis' TV bands went on the Grammys and said all that racist shit against DJs right before performing with Deadmaus5? Awkward. A couple days ago he put out a pretty funny, lengthy, and charming apology, in which he said, in part “I don't know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that's badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the 'craft' is equally as important, I'm sure. I mean.....if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)"
Maybe he could do what Skrillex does though? Maybe we're not so different, after all, those of us who manipulate one type of machine to produce a sound and those who manipulate another type of machine to produce a sound? Just ask these broz in the Boston-based Pinn Panelle, a dubstep band from Berklee (oh word?), who perform live covers of songs by Skrillex, Nero, Rusko and the like. Here they are doing Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." The video has over 3.5 million views. Most of them are from Dave Grohl I'm guessing.
Pretty impressive, right? This sort of approach to EDM does solve one of the biggest drawbacks of the genre though, I have to say, which is that watching a guy pump his fists and party-his-effing-balls-off behind a computer at a live show is kind of :/. With these huge new advances in dubstep science, now you can watch dudes with pink highlights in their hair put their fingers on things in a specific order, which is one of the bedrocks of authentic, respectable entertainment.
Pinn Panelle are going to FUCKING RAGE (did I say that right?) Tuesday, February 21 at at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge.

These are the kids that need to be shoved into lockers.
Pretty sure the only thing these dudes are getting pushed into are a mountain of neon slutwaver pussy.
Im the dude in the photo....its just funny there is a dave grohl label...
WHY ARE YOU DESTROYING MUSIC JAMES COLETTA?!? !!
Eh, that shit still sux.
Definitely true that watching one chap click things on a MacBook doesn't rock the same way a band rocks at a live show. On the other hand if you want to go and dance for 10 hours straight only a laptop pixie will be able to pace himself for that length of time. The problem is that we've started to blur the line - electronic acts are starting to play band-style slots. A DeadMau5 "concert" where he plays CDs and finishes at 11pm? Getthefuckouddahere. On the rock side we need some new jam bands who are willing to man up and do 10 hour sets and not expect everyone to be constantly paying them attention the whole time. Jazzbos in the 30s would play for two days with a smile on their face.
that's a pretty good point. could probably be a post of its own.
Shit, that kid needs to do us all a favor and shave his head so we don't ever have to look at those god awful guylights from 2000.
I didn't know who Skrillex was until I watched the Grammys, and now I want all the time people have spent talking about how good he is back so I can listen to real trashy hip hop and pop music. Give those Grammys to people who dance their asses off and lip sync at the same time, duhhhhhhh
Guylights, heh! Classic. Skrillex always look slightly ashamed of himself in photos.
The thing is, there's so much to unpack about Skrillex. Firstly: he himself is easy to make fun of (although he's getting paid to have fun, so who's really winning?). Secondly: it's fun to make fun of dubstep headz who are getting all butthurt about "their" music being bastardised. (But the truth is, as lame as it might be it does hurt when a band or style you've been into from the bottom up sells out or gets taken over by people without any idea of where it they/it came from.) Thirdly: people who loathe all electronic music and don't differentiate between Skrillex and a Horsepower record from 2003 are getting all foamy too, and it's fun to laugh at them. None of this is new - I was just reading about a painter called Paul Klee and he decided not to pursue a career in music as a teenager because “I didn’t find the idea of going in for music creatively particularly attractive in view of the decline in the history of musical achievement.” This was in 18-fucking-90!
Er, anyway I should really go to work.

This band is pretty impressive! It's pretty obvious how passionate they are with their genre. I wish to see them soon at the Long Island live music pub.
I have a laptop that is in dire need of repair. The problem is that the place that the manufacturer (Toshiba) recommends has a policy of erasing the hard drive if it is damaged or "the software is corrupted". The laptop's hard drive is perfectly fine, but it has only Linux installed on it, and I expect that Linux will be regarded as "corrupted" software, resulting in an unnecessary erasing of the disk.
