We all love the new M83 record now, right? Gorgeous, and chilling, and grandiose, and, most importantly, it subconsciously reminds us of a time gone by in our lives. That's the most important function of contemporary music after all, conjuring up nostalgia for other things we've experienced/heard of. The most important function of the internet, however, is letting people know that you know what the things are that other things remind other people of, then sharing that information to bum everyone/let them know you think you're better than them.
What is it this record sounds like specifically though? It's been bugging me for a while. As my friend Fartmall said recently of a different band (although it works here too), "it sounds like the soundtrack to every 'naive kid/rookie cop/1st year lawyer gets in over their head in some drug/arms smuggling/govt conspiracy but eventually their boy scout training/dead grampa's wisdom/navajo medicine pouch helps them overcome & prevail' movie from 1986-1989."
You might also say it sounds like Peter Gabriel with tribal ear-plugs throat-noodling on the savanna, and you'd be right there too, it does sound like both of those things. But there's something else here, and this song, "Wait" in particular has been killing me while I try to suss it out.
Then it hit me -- the rumbling cello low end, the slow build to catharsis, the mealy-mouthed stabs at poignancy -- homeboy just updated "The World I Know" by Collective Soul and drove it through the synth carwash. I feel so much better now.
Anyway, good luck enjoying this one ever again. The internet.

To be one of those dudes, they also played something that sounded remarkably similar to the theme from Airwolf towards the end of the set in Boston the other night.
So it sounded remarkably awesome you mean?
You big buzzkill. I thought the show was amazing.
;p
♥ that Collecty Soulz song though.
There are a few important points about the new M83 record. The previous statement depends upon how you define the word "important".
1. It's about 45 minutes too long.
2. It is critically important that they get rid of that chick whispering bad high school poetry over amazing pop songs (and ruining them).
3. The album is not nearly as good as the previous album "Saturdays = Youth" but since the intelligentsia has come to a consensus on it, everyone is going to say it's their best album.
4. The song with the kid talking about frogs is gay.
Gayer than that Belle and Sebastian side project Looper.
Gayer than knowing that Belle and Sebastian had a side project called Looper.
