I'm like the A-Team of racism on the internet. If someone is being racist in your face, and you need help, and you know where to find him, you can send Luke an email...and he'll probably post your thing. Remember when People Who Said Nigger Today was a thing? My homegirl Debbie is bummed out about some of her friends on Facebook, one of whom she'll probably encounter IRL at her high school reunion this week. Last year she was bummed about people eating lunch at their desks.
There was a moment there, before the flood of sexual harassment allegations, when Republicans seemed to be rallying behind Herman Cain, and I was optimistic that real progress had been made on race relations in this country. Can you imagine a black Republican presidential candidate sparring off with a sitting black President? It’s a beautiful thought, even though it would mean Obama would be debating with a half-moron womanizer (which is better, I suppose, than the alternative of a full-moron woman like Michele Bachmann).

Since one doesn’t see or hear a lot of racists where I live near Cambridge, I am surprised that people still hate black people. Thankfully, I have Facebook to remind me that these idiots continue to exist and that I grew up with them!
I am going to my ten year high school reunion in Columbus, Ohio this Friday. I am bringing my boyfriend and I am slightly petrified to introduce him to the suburban mid-westerners who used to torment me throughout my adolescence. True, I have “blossomed” since those awkward pubescent years, but introducing him to a racist is something I did not expect.
There is a girl that I went to high school with that I am friends with on Facebook for some reason. Laziness? The lulz? Her status updates “entertain” me I guess. That is why I have continued a Facebook “friendship” with Brandi. Her typical posts include statements like: “Life Sucks” or “I got fired again FUCK", or “why is everyone out to get me”, or “can’t I get a break world.” Typically, I feel bad for her since I am sure life has dealt her a difficult hand of cards (she was born in Ohio after all). Well, after the status update she wrote yesterday, I shall pity her no more.
Here’s what she said:
"Sitting at urgent care with the girls... an african lady has 5 screaming children. Kylie [Brandi’s daughter] says 'curse you african for having so many children' bwahahaha."
Laughing at your daughter’s racist remark, one I am sure she learned from her mother, is just sickening. Entertaining your daughter who puts a curse on an immigrant woman for having five loud screaming kids, there are just no words.
I was tempted to share my disgust with her and comment on her status, but I unfriended her instead. I am sure that being corrected by a left leaning liberal Bostonian implant would be enough to make her little racist mind go a tad bit crazy either virtually or in person at the reunion. And if there is any life lesson I have learned since high school, it’s not to fuck with the crazy.

Kind of agree that 5 screaming babies of any color would drive me over the edge too though, just saying.
“There are just no words,” and yet here we are, several paragraphs deep.
I wouldn't mind going a few paragraphs deep... ahh never mind. I need to rethink a lot of life choices I've made.
Ohio, high school reunions, naming a child Kylie, over-thinking Facebook actions, being named Brandi, plenty of list-worthy things here.
Because these events are so rare I find myself too stunned to deal with them properly. A member of a local (Somerville) private club was explaining to me how his club has become more open (from 100% Italian) in recent years except, of course, with regards to women and blacks.
Huh? What?
I was too dumb-founded to respond and now, weeks later, I'm still angry with myself.
Being named anything... being from anywhere...
being.
What is a private club anyway? Srs question.

In Debbie's defense, I made her add that part in.
Not that it's not true.
The Ohio jokes are from Luke I swear :)
I'd probably take them out. It ruins the credibility of your argument and comes across as hypocritical. After all, last time I checked two wrongs don't make a right. Just my 2 cents.
You know what would be great, if this was just a story that someone this one person knows was mean on Facebook. That would be hilarious.
This comment thread is racist against humor.
Luke, perhaps I'm confused then. I assumed this was a post about one person's reaction to racism in today's society and how social sites have shown it to be still pervasive. My bad. FWIW, I just reread it and I'm now ROTFL. Silly me.
It's all good. You might want to try re-booting your computer, then going ahead and logging back in and trying it now.
FINE I CHANGED IT SO I'M THE RACIST. EVERYONE HAPPY NOW? jesus christ.
I think there is a good chance that 3:22 is from Ohio.
Someone should write a blog post about how this one guy made a joke about Ohioans on the internet.
Why is this a racist comment? If she said "Curse you American for having so many kids", would you feel the same way?
lot of entry level ptsotl readers on this one i guess.
Examples of nearby private clubs: The Polish Club in Cambridge, The Dante Clubs (Cambridge and Somerville), the various veterans clubs (VFW, DAV, etc.), Masons, Elks, Moose and so forth.
These clubs have "club" liquor licenses and are open only to members and guests thereof.
LOL @ how people think invoking the name Cambridge puts a force field around you, impenetrable from any accusation of being racist or conservative. I lived in east Cambridge from birth to 4 years ago and pretty much everyone in my family and neighborhood with very rare exception hates Blacks and Hispanics. Still.
Well durr, EAST Cambridge is full of degenerate scumbags.
that's racist against the Portuguese
Take that shit back to Portugalia/Pugliese
this is hard to decipher. is it saying the word "african" that is racist, or is it that noting that someone is of african decent is racist?
either way - good catch. we need MORE policing of thought and speech, not less. if people keep using the word 'african' or noticing when people are african, soon we'll be living in a world where people continue use the word 'african' and notice when people are african,
and we all know where slippery slope ends - GENOCIDE.
If you see a black person and the first thing that comes to mind is Africa, and then you express that thought in words, then yes, that is racist.
There is a big difference between "policing thought" and "making fun of douches." The former shouldn't be done, the latter always.
Would now be a bad time to use the "N Word?"
There is never a bad time to use the N word.
